RECONSTRUCTION OF BERTHS

DATE OF COMPLETION The three berths have been taken over by KPT for operations on 24-01-2011. The Honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan inaugurated the project on 30-Spetember-2011. And two remaining handed over on 30th April, 2012.

KPT has 30 dry cargo berths and 560 m quay wall at Napier Mole Boat wharf for country crafts. 4 berths were reconstructed in near past and PICT was established there. 5 berths at KICT are recently reconstructed. KPT plans to reconstruct remaining berths in phases. The salient features of this programme are as under:

Phase -1

Berths 10-14 were reconstructed in phase-1 at 16 m design depth. Design consultancy conducted by M/s Scott Wilson Ltd. of UK. The contract for phase-1 was awarded to M/s Ssangyong of South Korea. Consultancy for supervision awarded to M/s Lyon Associates of USA and M/s Techno Consult of Pakistan. Work commenced in March 2008. The total cost of this phase is Rs 5.5 Billions, which is being financed from KPT’s own resources. The three berths were completed and taken over by KPT for operations on 24-01-2011 and two remaining handed over on 30th April, 2012. REHABILITATION OF BERTH 1 TO 3 AT EAST WHARVES

The 1 to 3 berths were constructed in late 70’s and now these berths become old. Therefore, KPT opted to take up these berths to improve their structural life through rehabilitation of backup/stacking plinth area & frontage quay wall area having length of 225 meter (Apprx).  To achieve this task KPT engaged design consultant M/s Zaheeruddin carried out feasibility & design report of the required work for its rehabilitation including tender documents. According to their recommendation the underneath structures of berths (i.e. rackers pile, slab & beams) are quiet durable /strengthen by their physical appearance and may further utilize for next 7-10 years.

In order to implement this project work, KPT invited tenders from the local contracting firms, and thereafter completion of all tendering formalities  the work was awarded to the lowest bidder M/s Echo West International at the cost of  Rs 180,134,944/=. 

 

PAKISTAN INTERNATIONAL CONTAINER TERMINAL (PICT)

KPT awarded a second Container Terminal on BOT in June 2002. This Terminal at Berths 6-9 East Wharf has 600 m quay wall with - 13.5 m. Terminal planned capacity is 450,000 TEUs.  PICT has also developed in Phases as KICT.

This was a US $ 75 million project.

Phase-lll of the project has been completed in January 2009.

KICT, is already operational at the West Wharf. KICT over the years has developed in phases. Previously with only two phases functional, terminal area of 135,122 sqm had an annual capacity of 400,000 TEU. Cost of Phase I & II was USD 65 million. With the third phase, the terminal has an overall area of 260,000 sqm with an additional investment of US$ 55 million. Terminal capacity increased to 700,000 TEUs. The 973 m long berths of the terminal deepened to cater for 14 meter draught container ships. The Terminal is equipped with 6 gantry cranes, 15 RTGs, 4 Top lift, 4 empty handler, 50 chasis etc. Phase-III was inaugurated by Honarable Prime Minister in November, 2008 and has been completed. Second amendment agreement is under negotiations
